Through overlapping layers of imagery, sound, film, textiles, language and movement, Michelle Sander’s works function as settings, soundtracks, movements, poetry and networks–attending to how digital and analog time is constructed, manipulated and, above all, experienced.
Often rendered as individualized coterminous deliverables (digital imagery, books, poems, and audio recordings, mixed with the detritus of the natural world), her works create spaces–both digital and physical–out of overlapping cross-sections in which cultural referencing and emotional responses are mutually contingent and reactive.
Sander’s work is deeply rooted in storytelling and the art that develops while waiting: the concrete created from the overlapped, illusory layers of time. Collapsing distinctions between the succinct and the ineffable, the everyday and the transcendent, between allegory and exactitudes, Sander’s work performs tonal shifts and code switching, disruptions, overlapping and bleeding. It juxtaposes physical intimacies and vast, conceptual distances–power || surrender, sensuality || modesty, joy || trauma, nature || technology, analog || digital, over- || under-exposure–viewed through the lens of the feminine experience and experiential time.
Sander grew up along the rolling hills and river bluffs of the Missouri River in America’s heartland. Her work is most often in the mediums of film, digital design, sound, and performance art.
